The second performance of the 2017-2018 91ÇÑ×Ó Performing Arts Series promises to be an exciting evening featuring a wide variety of ensembles and music. Frisson is a nine-piece chamber ensemble out of New York City featuring the best and brightest of the Big Apple’s music scene, morphing into various guises to perform rarely heard masterworks. They bring their music to the 91ÇÑ×Ó stage on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
Under the leadership of Artistic Director Thomas Gallant and Associate Director Caeli Smith, both of whom also play in the ensemble, Frisson expands and contracts into quintets, sextets and even a chamber orchestra to perform works by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Strauss, Barber and Copland among others. The ensemble is made up of the full string family and the instruments commonly found in a woodwind quintet (which includes the brass instrument French Horn) without additional brass or percussion.
Artistic Director Thomas Gallant is considered one of the few virtuoso performers on oboe in the world today, having performed in many of the world’s greatest performance venues and listing among his performances collaborations with the Kronos Quartet and flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal. He has premiered works by 20th century composers Luciano Berio, Krzysztof Penderecki and Elliot Carter. The remaining members of the ensemble also have extensive resumés featuring solo and ensemble performances throughout the world and holding degrees from prestigious institutions including the Julliard School of Music, Curtis Institute of Music and Yale University.
The Frisson performance will take place at the 91ÇÑ×Ó Vara Martin Daniel Performing Arts Center on the Hill County Campus in Hillsboro. The concert is free and open to the public. A reception provided by the Monday Review Club will be held immediately afterward.
